I just bought a brand new bike, and the chain has a stiff link, how do I fix this? Is it a defective chain?

The bike shop is 25 miles away, so if there is an easy fix, I'd like to not take the bike back.

Whenever the chain goes around the rear derailleur, it bends in one way going around the first pulley, and gets stuck, and when it goes around the 2nd pulley, it makes a noise as it "snaps" out of its stuck position.

to loosen the link, gently bend where the link is located at. Instead of bending the way it naturally would bend, bend with the pins facing towards you. Flex it enough to loosen the pins in the link. Good luck.

A stiff link is a relatively common problem, and is not too difficult to fix.

According to Sheldon Brown:

The easiest way to fix this is to bend the problem area of the chain into a "Z" shape, with the bad joint on the diagonal part, then flex the chain back and forth. This will slightly spread the tight plates, and free up the link.

from zinn machanics book just kinda move it in different ways to un stiffin it it works for me all the time kinda just bend it back and forth but not to much

Sheldon Brown has the easiest fix, see below.

well. it's defective but you just take it off the normal way and then just buy a new one make sure it's not really tight good luck =).
