How much would it cost for me to own a motorcycle?

Hey, I don't know much about motorcycles, and I'm wondering how much it would be to buy and maintain one (including price of a decent used bike, gas, insurance, winter storage, leathers, helmet) For insurance purposes, I'm female, and I plan to take lessons. Thanks!

Your question is way too general.

New or used?

If new, where do you live? Fire/theft and collision insurance are going to be huge factors in the cost of ownership... and if you buy new, it's going to be foolish not to have theft insurance, especially. The cost largely depends on your age, where you live, and the type of bike. Depending on these factors, it could be anywhere from 30 dollars a month to over 200 dollars a month, just for the insurance.

If you want the dealer to do the work, you might be looking at
New tires every couple years: 500.00
Oil change every 2-3k miles. 50.00
New chain and sprocket every 20k miles - 150.00
Gas: any ones guess

Depending on the type of bike and where you live, you may be able to forgo theft insurance...which can make a world of difference. If you can do your own maintenance and can forgo comprehensive/theft/collision you can ride a motorcycle very cheap.

*** oh, I see you specified used... well, again depends on what you're looking for. I've had plenty of good rides for around 4k... but for a beginner type of bike "honda rebel, virago, ninja 250, etc.. you can expect to get a decent 5 to 10 year old bike that's not a money pit for anywhere from 1-3k. But before you buy a used bike, find out where you are going to service it. Sometimes it can be tricky to find someone to work on an older model bike.

No really, it all adds up, you can spend as much or as little for gear as you want. But remember you get what you pay for. the knowledge is "pay however much your head is worth" I paid about 300 for mine. more expensive seems to equate more comfortable also.

The other gear you don't have to worry quite so much on, but its going to cost you a few hundred. A decent used bike will probably cost you 4k at least, but again I'll assume we are talking street bikes, and this is a good start price for anything that isn't total crap. Lessons are usually a requirement in most states. Plan to spend at least 30/month on insurance, depending on what coverage you are required.

I have a bike cost of storage 0 it's in my shed and I ride it during the winter. insurance is 115 annually. cost of a bike 1500 - 25000. I paid cash for mine 10 years ago it was 16000 then. gas less than a car.

You'd want to spend a bit more than $300 on gear. For example, my relatively inexpensive but good quality mid-range gear (boots, trousers, jacket, gloves, helmet) cost me about $1400.

depend what bike you want take the price of that + $300 for gear + $500/year for oil changes ECT add gas 40MPG store in garage +$50 for the cover. and add insurance

For riding gear, check out ' dennis kirk. com '. You can get an HJC helmet for under $100. They're the lightest helmets I've found. Light is less likely to break your neck if or when you crash.
