Motorbikes at Red lights: Ride up between traffic?

(Firstly, yes I realize I've already asked this, but I didnt mention I'm from South Australia, not America. S.Aus laws would be handi-er)

To elaborate on the question: When I see a bunch of cars stopped at lights (Two lanes going in my direction.), Is it legal for me to ride up between the cars to the front (Seeing as a bike can fit easily, is quicker, and its safer too.) providing that there will be enough time to do so before everyone starts moving. I've done it alot, and I've done it with a police car in the area (On the other side of the lights though.) Im sure they saw me but they didn't do anything.

Further note: I'm on My L's, incase that changes anything.

Also, if it is legal, is there any certain side I must ride up on? Also are there any laws to prevent the cars driving off before the biker gets a chance to?

Any links to legal doc's would be very appreciated.

Thanks,
CJ

kneedeep and ucantseeme are both wrong. In most places it is NOT illegal to 'split lanes' to get in front at a stop light.

If you're just on your L, well, ask a cop. What do they call the driving rules in SA? Here I can google any states 'vehicle code' and it usually comes up first. You might want to try that.

Where ever it's legal, and cars drive on the right, you should pass on the left. Driving to the right of cars in the right lane or on a one lane in your direction road will get you a ticket just about anywhere in the world. There would not be any laws saying who gets to go first, unless you're turning at an intersection.

If you're on a bike, splitting lanes to get to the front at a stop light, you go first - that's why you went up there, isn't it?

Ride safe.
Keep the rubber side down.

to ride your bike between any vehicles is not only illeagal but dangerous as hell.wait your turn and pass when safe.its kinda hard to save time when your DEAD.

Doing this is completely illegal to do and you can injure yourself or hurt someone as well.

I can't help on the legal side, but I can help with the practical. Stupid, frightened people will tell you splitting lanes like this is "dangerous". It isn't when done properly. That means not doing it if you're moving at more than 10mph or so faster than the traffic ( say you're on a freeway and the traffic is stop start). At stop lights, you have to be careful the light doesn't change as your splitting; I always merge when I see that happening. When I get to the front of the line, I place my bike in front of one of the cars at the front, so they can't move off before I do. Rude, but it makes sure you won't get run over. The main thing to bear in mind here, and it goes for ALL situations really, is you have to assume you're invisible - they haven't seen you, and most likely are going to move into your path, so YOU need to make sure there isn't an accident. As you get more experienced, watch people at t-junctions. They will look straight at you, and then pull right out in front of you ! The only way to be safe is to assume you're invisible, they haven't seen you, and then when they do something dumb, you're ready with avoiding action.
