Motorbikes at Red-Lights: Ride up between Traffic?

To elaborate on the question: When I see a bunch of cars stopped at lights (Two lanes going in my direction.), Is it legal for me to ride up between the cars to the front (Seeing as a bike can fit easily, is quicker, and its safer too.) providing that there will be enough time to do so before everyone starts moving. I've done it alot, and I've done it with a police car in the area (On the other side of the lights though.) Im sure they saw me but they didn't do anything.

Further note: I'm on My L's, incase that changes anything.

Also, if it is legal, is there any certain side I must ride up on? Also are there any laws to prevent the cars driving off before the biker gets a chance to?

Any links to legal doc's would be very appreciated.

Thanks,
CJ

Might be worth noting I'm from S.Australia, not America...

It's not a safe manoeuver to squeeze yourself between cars or trucks. They may not see you, and you will be the one to suffer if someone hits you.
Because you have a Driver's Licence, you are also supposed to abide by the Rules of the Road.......and......other vehicles aren't to squeeze between vehicles, and so, neither should you!

it is absolutely not legal, nor is it safe. Two motorcycles can share a lane, but a motorcycle BETWEEN lanes, let alone in a lane with a car, is extremely unsafe.

First off, many drivers probably won't even see you, so who knows what they might do. Second off, you're placing yourself between two big metal machines that are probably driven by bad drivers (most car drivers seem nuts when you're on a bike).

Also, driving a car between lanes is illegal, so what would make a motorcycle different? I really wouldn't do it. It sounds unsafe, it makes other motorists angry, and gives bikers a bad name.

Depends on your locale. Here in NYC lane splitting is illegal, but in Cali, it's not. I read somewhere that speed is a factor also, as in not exceeding a certain speed while lane splitting.

This is something that you need to stop doing. What do you do if someone opens their car door? Or puts out their arm? Or moves their car over to where there is no clearance?

Sooner or later, if you keep this up, you will regret it.

Regards,
Dan

Lane Splitting is legal in some states, but not in others.

But since you posted this in "safety" I should mention that it is not safe.

I rarely even do it on my bicycle anymore.

That would constitute a 'marked lane violation', plus it really is totally unsafe.
The best legal documentation is from the state in which you wish to commit this particular violation.

This is illegal in all states to do this........
