Can a landlord be held responsible for locked up items stolen on his property?

I live in an apartment and in the last two weeks I've had a wheel stolen from my car, and my $800 dollar bicylce stolen. The bike was locked to a metal beam that was part of the building, can the landlord be held responsible for either of these events? And if not, can I be allowed out of my lease because the landlord has not been able to provide security for my personal items?

First of all, I have renter's insurance but it doesn't cover anything outside of the apartment, which I found out the hard way. The point I was trying to make, is that two weeks prior to having my bike stolen I had a wheel stolen off of my car. I brought up the security issues, and nothing was addressed. There is also a big difference between TYING something a locking something up to an I beam two feet from my front door that is part of the apartment's structure, with a chain and lock, it's hardly negligent, that'd be tantamount to saying, I rode to work, locked it up at the bike rack and that was irresponsible. Why do people with opinions and not facts even bother posting. It just serves to further upset me.

Unfortunately, you are getting facts. The landlord is not responsible for your car nor an expensive bike you left outside, even if it was chained to an I beam. The car is an occurance that can happen anywhere and everywhere and unfortunately, the bike is your fault due to your own actions of leaving it outside.. It is good that you have rental insurance for the contents of your apartment as the landlord usually only has structural insurance on the building. And that is all he has to have. Next time, dont leave something expensive outside, even if it is chained. Thieves get smarter every year and thefts are up big time due to the economy. I am sorry you lost an expensive item and I hope that you have learned from this. It is upsetting and I do sympathize with you on losing something expensive.

I am with Jager, if your house has locks on it, what more can your landlord do. He can not stop a would be burglar from stealing. If he could, this world would be crime free. It is the burglar who is at fault and yourself. Invest in a portable security system maybe, or the best bet is try renters insurance, it is cheap, I pay $10 a month and I have had stuff stolen, I called the police filed a report and dropped off the report to my insurance agent and in less then a week I was paid.

Im a realtor and the only way to hold a landlord responsible is if it happened because he was negligent. Any judge will tell you you were negligent for leaving an 800 dollar bike tied to a beam outside the building.

i think you can not held him guilty but still you can talk to a cop he will understand you better as he knows the rules more exactly

No and no. That's like trying to hold the police accountable because they can't stop crime.
