How could I push start my bike when the rear wheel locks up as soon as I let go of the clutch?

Since my kick starter broke on my Yamaha DT 175, I had to go with the push start method. I did everything I was supposed to; put bike in start, pull choke, open fuel petcock, put bike in 1st or 2nd, hold clutch in and when I'm up to a good speed I let go but all happens is the rear wheel locks up. Can anyone tell why and how to fix it?

If you're sure the engine isn't locked up. then you will need to use a higher gear.

Yeah, you can jump onto it as you pop the clutch. I used to have to do that in 3rd gear on my 1953 BSA Gold star- when it caught it would wheelie immediately!

Probably not enough speed.. try to get someone to push it after you releasing the clutch..

Kick it up into a higher gear and try it.

higher the gear the easier it will be to push start

try 3rd gear.
