GIANT bike making clanking sound?

I just bought a used GIANT FCR3 training bike and when I pedal hard, usually in 3rd or 4th gear, I sometimes hear this clanking sound, which I think is coming from the crank hub. Can someone explain what the problem may be? Should I be concerned? How to fix? Thanks!

I too have Giant... 20+ years old...

Well if the noice is coming from the inside the crank itself - and not something rubbing or hitting the gears/deraillur then yeah it's inside the crank - it's probably your "lower bracket" and it may be an easy fix to get it tightened by your local bike shop. To tighten the lower bracket it should only cost around $7-$10.

You might also hear a ticking, popping sound under fast spinning or when putting a load on the pedals.

This happened to me recently - I had the bracket tightened but it didn't stop the intermitent clicking so I replaced the whole crank. It was about $54.00 including labor at the bike shop and actually - I am glad I did it! Any less resistance you can get is great when pedaling and attacking hills. It was time.

It probably won't hurt anything worse than it is to keep riding, but definitely think about replacing or overhauling - you'll have peace of mind and be less annoyed and worried during your training rides!

Greetings,

Check that all bolts are tight, chainwheel, crank and pedals. Be sure the assembler greased the pedals before installing them. If all is tight and you still get the noise then the bottom bracket assembly may need to be removed and inspected for defects or improper assembly. If the noise is coming from the crank area these are the likely culprits.
