I used to own a 81 GS750L. I used an "Impact Screw Driver" to loosen the very tight screws on the Sprocket cover. It was the only way, a regular Phillips screw drives just would not do it.
A usable Impact driver can be purchased from an import tool store for less than $20. It comes with a driver that is designed to be struck with a hammer, and 4 driver bits. For the GS750L Use the largest Phillips driver bit.
Make sure the driver is set to loosen the screw (drives the screw counterclockwise). Place the tip of the driver squarely in the screw head, hold the driver handle firmly with one hand while you strike the end of the driver with a heavy steel hammer (I use a 2 lb. hand sledgehammer). One or two good whacks should break the screw loose from the threads. Then you can use a regular phillips screwdriver to uncrew the screws.

The shift shaft might be bent.
Bolt the shift lever back on.
Is it angled "square" to the cover.
If it looks bent, you'll have to cut off the end of the shift lever with a hacksaw - then replace the shift lever, clutch lock washer and clutch cover gasket.
Make sure you have all the parts before doing something that extreme.
The end of the shift lever could be "mushroomed" and won't fit through the hole in the cover - file it "round".
