Why would my motorcycle starter brushes burn out again? |
i recently been having what i thought was battery problems, so i charged up my bike a bit with a car running, took off the cables and bike started. then one day i boosted the bike with the car running(i now know to never do this!), and it died. so i tested the solenoid and it seems to work and clicks, checked power to starter and it was good. so i took apart starter and noticed wires inside had broke off and brushes cracked and burnt. i replaced the brushes and holder(new wires in repair kit) , hooked up everything and it started the bike. it worked but for about 10 starts, now im having the same problem again. took apart the starter again, my brushes are done again??? where did i go wrong? im pretty sure i replaced everything back the way it should be, i have the manual... honda interceptor 84 , 750 Check the rest of your starting system. Not the electrical, but the mechanical. Something is causing excess drag. The starter is working way, way too hard. A damaged over-running clutch caused a similar problem in one of my bikes. |
