I know what you mean, the thought of getting on a bike & seeing where the road takes you is very tempting.

If possible, I would consider getting a touring bike. There are different brands available like Trek 520, Cannondale, Surly long haul trucker, etc
They are road bikes made to be more comfy. Often with a more relaxed geometry, a sturdy frame, tripple gearing with extra low gears, the ability to have front and rear racks with fully loaded pannier bags & drop bars.

They are not always the cheapest option, but they are designed for the purpose of touring.

It's also possible to use a mountain bike as well. They have a sturdy frame, quite low gearing & many have the option of adding racks & bar-ends/touring bars. The geometry of the chainstay might be an issue, so make sure your feet won't hit the panniers when pedaling
Some hybrids might do the job as well. I've seen a web-site with someone turning a Trek Fx hybrid/flat bar road bike, into a durable touring bike. http://davidreid.blogspot.com/search/lab... I've got a similar bike, and would like to adapt it in a similar way.

Some things to consider on most conventional bicycles are that there are eyelets to add a rack on both the rear and the fork, there is room to pedal without bumping the panniers, the frame is sturdy and comfy enough & there is ample low-gearing.

Or you can be different & try somethng outside the norm. People have been known to bike tour on recumbants, tandems, folding bikes, Penny Farthings or pull along a trailer instead of pannier bags .

Where are you touring? For how long? Will you be self-supported (camping)? Is this a credit card tour (motels & restaurants)?

Long, self-supported tours in faraway lands require a different machine than a week-long cc tour in your home state.

Editing your q (aol-ese for "question") might bring helpful answers.

In the meantime, I'd recommend you read this:

There's a heap of touring info available elsewhere, too...just gotta look a bit.
