What does "Did not finish" mean in the olympics bike road race?

Im asking because im a big olympic fan and i was looking on wiki that alot of people "Did not finish" does that mean they gave up? They have to atleast finish the race right?

Did not finish could be due to various factors as mentioned already. But the one not mentioned, and more likely the reason, is the fact that road racing while an individual sport is run like a team. The designated top rider, have "worker" teammates that work to help their top rider win (ie., they ride in front of the top rider so the top rider can draft; workers can sacrifice themselves by speeding up and forcing other racers to follow suit to tire part of the competitors; they can work the field to catch-up to breakaway racers; they can be the one to pass food/drinks to the top rider). Once their "worker" jobs are done, they typically do not finish because there are "time trials," another individual compeition later on in the Olympics they must conserve their energy and efforts for.

There could be a few possibilities:
1. There may have been a crash, and the cyclist was not able to finish the race. His bike may not have been in a condition to finish the race.
2. He gave up during the race (although this is unlikely, for why would you qualify for the Olympics just to give up).
3. He was disqualified during the race for one reason or another.

Most likely, it was the first scenario.

you don't have to finish the race, if something happens to you and you are unable to finish it, like if you fall ill or are just too tired to go on, then it goes down on paper that you did did not finish the race.

Means they dropped out before the end. Most likely the crashed.

that means they didnt finish.
you could ride off the track and give up if you want.
people did because they knew they were out of the race..

It means they did not cross the finishing line and dropped out of the race during it
