If i buy an threadless adapter for my old road bike, i don't have to buy a new threadless headset, do i?

i can keep the original threaded one, correct? my quill is too much trouble when i want to switch out handlebars. and i dont want to replace the original fork (had it sandblasted and powder coated to match frame). can anyone give me any advice or suggestions about these adapters?

The adapter allows you to keep your original headset. Indeed, it won't work with anything but a threaded quill-style headset.

I would just stick with the quill stem, as the adapter is heavy, and a little clunky looking and, of course, you'll have to buy a new threadless style stem too.

Your headset will be fine. You will need a new stem and if you are using the existing handle bars you will require new bar tape. The one good thing about that system is you can raise and lower your bar position easier but it is a heavier system. Hope that helps.
