I have a schwinn bike with what I think has a .883 size head set . What can I do to upgrade the stem?

Either you have a very old Schwinn with a 7/8" steerer or you are explaining wrong. I think the latter is the case.

If you are measuring inside the steerer for a stem measurement you need a stem with a 22.2mm diameter. These are still readily available.

If you have taken the fork out and are measuring the inside diameter of the bearing cups where they fit into the frame then you have a 7/8" headset and the only place you'll find replacements is from another old Schwinn.

The headset? Not sure where you're coming from...

If you have a quill stem they are standard, purchase what you want. If you have a thread-less fork most are 1", a few are 1 1/8 (mostly DH and jump bikes).
