Big or small wheel scooters... what's the best?

http://www.scooterama.net.au/

I'm not convinced either is better to be honest.

The problem with a lot of scooters sold as "big wheelers" is that the wheel size is not actually that much different from regular scooters. For example, the Yamaha XCity has wheels only 1 inch bigger than the Yamaha XMAX. What sort of advantage is that going to confer...?

The theory goes that a larger diameter wheel will exert a greater gyroscopic force, and that is largely true if all other variables are the same. However, they are often not. The weight of a gyroscope will dictate the magnitude of it's effect as much as it's diameter. Smaller diameter wheels tend to be wider as do the tyres, so I think the jury is still out. I now ride a Yamaha TMAX 500 scooter which still has comparatively small wheels for a 100mph bike, but I've never had any problems with stability.

In practical terms, bigger wheels take up more space. This means less room for storage and the rider. Smaller wheels make a scooter much more nimble. Large wheels deal with road imperfections better than small ones. You pays your money and you takes your pick.

Keep in mind that the bigger the wheel, the greater the stability that you get from gyroscopic forces. In effect, a big heavy spinning thing tends to want to stay upright.

This means little in the city, where small wheels are preferable for maneuverability, but means a lot when you're doing 35+ and a truck blows past you going the other way.

So the answer probably depends on where you're driving. If it's mostly stop-and-go traffic in the city, then small wheels are probably what you want. But if you're driving on country roads, or the highway, then you probably want big wheels.

The bigger the better - more stability.
Small wheels get lost in pot holes and transfer hazardous road surfaces to the rider, where as large wheels just roll over them without a thought.

Both are good, its mostly a personal preference. The best thing to do is test drive both and see what you prefer.

Like they said it depends on where you will be riding the most.

inbetween is best
